Feline Instincts' Twelve Year Study on Additional Feline Organ Support

(Canines can have similar results)

"Your cats truly are a testament to holistic care, and a raw food diet".
Dr. Gardner

Very often we are asked what more can be done to protect the health of your cat or dog. This report will answer that question.

Feline Instincts has two veterinarians; Dr. Anna Maria Gardner and Dr. J. Patrick Reeves. Dr. Reeves is an allopathic/homeopathic vet here in Texas who is supportive of the care our cats get homeopathically from Dr. Gardner. He does all our cats' blood work, surgery if needed and exams. All supplements we used in this study were prescribed by our veterinarian Dr. Gardner and Dr Reeves. Please consult your holistic vet for the dosing amounts your cat or dog needs.

We all know that the best diet for our fur friends is a balanced raw diet. What we didn't know or want to realize is that no matter how well we feed our pets they still age on us in less years then our own bodies do. Ageing alone causes the organs to deteriorate over time. We asked our holistic vet what more can we do at Feline Instincts to help support our cats health besides a balanced raw diet? She said that a cat at the age of 5 years old can start additional kidney and heart support. Before this age use Standard Processes’ Feline Whole Body Support.  By targeting specific organs with supplements designed for these organs we can help our fur friends age more slowly and extend their lives in a healthy way. Feline Instincts’ twelve year study report is here now to help you find more ways to keep your cat or dog's body stronger longer while thriving on their balanced raw diets.

We use one a day of the following to support heart, liver and kidneys in healthy cats:

Standard Process Renafood one a day.

Standard Process Cardio Plus.

Standard Process Feline Hepatic Support

For the last twelve years we have been supplementing all our cats with a heart supplement by VetriScience called Coenzyme Q 10 and in January of 2004 we started an additional tablet by Standard Process called Cardio Plus also for their hearts. We started our cats on the Coenzyme Q 10 supplements in 1997 when we un-expectantly lost our Bali to congestive heart failure.  Over the years we still hear of pets dying from this disease and it saddens me greatly. We can do more to help our pet's hearts stay strong. By the way, VetriScience Coenzyme Q 10 also helps with their gums.

We begin with our cat Lady Natascha. She turned 16 years old in 2005. She is now 19 years old ( thats is 88 years old in our life time) Her kidney levelsat age 16 showed a slight increase in her creatine (creatine and Phos levels show kidney damage). Along with her regular raw diet we started her on Standard Process' Renafood tablets once a day. In 30 days we had her blood rechecked and saw that slight increase had gone down below the high end. The supplements worked! It's been 2 years now since we started her on the kidney supplements. Lady Natascha's' blood work this year (2007) shows only a slight increase from the last blood tests in 2005.  We are all thrilled how well our girl is doing.

In addition, the BUN levels in a blood panel show the protein in the diet of your kitty. If your kitty is fed a raw diet expect to see a higher then normal BUN sometimes. This is normal for all raw meat eaters. It's a good protein when fed raw. However, if fed a commercial diet then a higher BUN level is not good - quality of protein not quantity makes all the difference in the world.

At the suggestion of our holistic vet, we have another kidney support pill to Lady Nataschas' diet...one Kidney Essentials chewable tablet a day by VetriScience. She is also getting 1CC 2 times a day of Pet Tinic and 100 ML of fluids with Vitamin B complex once a day. As of 2008 she is eating good and doing very well.

Caesar is 9 years old as of 2008 ( about 50 years old in human years)and has been on VetriScience Coenzyme Q 10 since we found him as a 4 week old kitten, starving and sick in 1999. He had an ongoing red line on his gums for several years. Antibiotics did not help him for the gum redness. Caesars’ gums are well now but we continue this supplement to keep his gums healthy.  He takes this supplement along with the heart and kidney every morning before his breakfast meal. Fortunately, Caesar loves to eat his Standard Process tablets right from his plate. I have to guard the others tablets so he doesn't get them too! We do however mix the Coenzyme Q 10 into his meals the same way we do for our other cats here at Feline Instincts. Caesar has been treated with various supportive homeopathy for emotional issues and other beneficial supplements by Standard Process over the years…all done with great success. Dr Levy has recently prescribed a homeopathy that is curing Caesars' hyperthesia condition.

2008 Update...His blood work came back with excellent results. The vet said his heart sounds like that of a 2 year old cat.

King Tut is 17 years old as of 2008 ( 72-80 years in our life time). He had a serious lung problem back in 1995. His lungs were clouded, he had an enlarged heart and he coughed a lot. We were told back then to give him prednisone shots once a month. We used this form of treatment for awhile but stopped it right away as soon as we found Dr Gardner and heard how terrible prednisone medications are.  Prednisone medications only cover up the health problem and never cure the cause of the illness. King Tut was treated with the Standard Process tablets Pneumotrophin PMG along with some homeopathy. We stopped the Pneumotrophin PMG when his lungs cleared and his heart went back to normal size in one year. In 1997 after his yearly exam of x-rays and ultrasound we discovered his lungs were clouded again but his heart was normal. We restarted the Pneumotrophin PMG and one year later (1998) his lungs cleared up again. Tut will remain on Pneumotrophin PMG along with the heart and kidney tablets by Standard Process for his whole life. The vets say that this health issue if from the horrible air pollution we have now especially in the Dallas Ft Worth area. His 2008 blood work showed only a slight increase in kidney levels. Everything else is excellent.

King Ramses is 18 years old as of 2008 (88 years old in our life time). He has been truly blessed with good health after we cured him of Feline Urological Syndrome (FUS) also known as Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD).  He suffered this disease for 5 years until we got him on a balanced raw diet with additional treatments of homeopathy and supplements. More recently though Ramses developed a calcium deposit in his back right knee joint due to a fall in 1994. This calcium deposit developed as a result of that accident. We are treating him with homeopathy and supplements by VetriScience. When he started to limp this year we started homeopathy for pain and always continue the VetriScience supplements Glyco Flex I for cats and DGP (Dog Gone Pain) daily with his other supplements. Unfortunately, this calcium cannot be dissolved or removed surgically. We have however, taken the pain away and helped his limping with homeopathy and organic whole gland supplements.

King Ramses was treated homeopathically for an abrasion to his right eye that started in January. No one knows how he got it but I do know it takes a very long time to heal. Once we stopped the antibiotic drops and pain drops to the affected eye three times a day we had better success at his eye clearing up. It seems that the drugs were keeping the eye from healing like it should. Dr Gardner has issued a homeopathy for his whole body to help speed up his healing. Update 11/17/07, The corneal sequestrum has gone within 3 weeks of homeopathy.

2008 King Ramses recently dealt with a liver tumor that caused liver failure. Please read all about his success story and gain valuable help if you ever need this deal with a liver problem for your cat or dog. Feline & Canine Liver Disease and Failure

While we do not believe in drugs for cures and only use them when absolutely necessary, all the Feline Instincts' cats are treated with various whole glands and natural supplements to help support their heart, kidney and gums. When they need an occasional liver detox we use Milk Thistle for a month or two and a prescribed homeopathic remedy for a week. The liver is the easiest organ to turn around if you catch it in time. This is why a yearly check up is so very important for your fur friend.

One more important tip….. We always have Dr. Gardner's before and after surgery homeopaths on hand in case we have an emergency. This remedy helps with the toxins and any pain from the surgery anesthesia. Your holistic veterinarian can make this remedy for you or contact Dr Gardner.

These Standard Process and VetriScience supplements can be bought from your local holistic veterinarian or Dr Gardner. Standard Process is only meant to be sold under the supervision of a vet. The dose you give depends totally on what your cat or dog needs and only a veterinarian can prescribe you that dose. If your fur friend has a health condition please note Dr. Gardner will normally need to do a consultation to decide which supplements and dosage is appropriate for your particular animal.

More recently, we added Colostrum by Symbiotics to our cats daily supplementations. This product is for a healthy immune system and intestinal tract. Bright Haven Holistic and Hospice sanctuary uses Colostrum and just like they told me my cats love licking it up when mixed with a little water. You can also use capsules.

Over the last 12 years, Feline Instincts has found that by adding additional supplements (under the direction of our vet) for the heart, kidney, and gums you can help your fur friend age slower and more gracefully.
