Kidney Support Diet

Not A Cure For Kidney Disease

Not A Cure For Kidney Disease i

Any cat caregivers' worst nightmare is learning one day their beloved friend has a terminal disease.   The initial reaction to the diagnosis may be a feeling of helplessness and despair.  While feline chronic renal failure (CRF) is progressive and terminal, with an early diagnosis, a lot of love, patience, and dedication the condition may be managed effectively for some time.  There is no cure for renal disease, but there is hope in stabilizing and maintaining a good quality of life for your cat.  If you are reading this then you are searching for that hope.  It is proven that a natural raw food diet can be very beneficial to cats with mild to moderate renal failure.  Feline Instincts® Kidney Diet supplement provides the basis for such a diet.  Our holistic veterinarians have this to say about our Kidney Support Diet

Dr. Anna Maria Gardner on CRF

A natural raw food diet can be very beneficial to cats with mild to moderate renal failure, who are under veterinarian care. Feline Instincts’ Kidney Support diet is modified to contain lower protein and higher fat, with B- vitamins that are so essential in renal failure. The kidneys can manage the lower protein intake and yet still enjoy the benefits of a raw food diet which is so much healthier for their bodies. Your holistic veterinarian can also prescribe natural remedies to help support your cat’s kidneys along with this diet.”

Anna Maria Gardner DVM, M.A. M.B. Holistic Veterinarian www.petsynergy.com

Most Holistic veterinarians prescribe an additional supplement called “Feline Renal Support by Standard Process to go along with our raw food diet. Our 12 year study showed that cats creatine levels are decreased significantly on this additional supplement along with our Kidney Support Diet. Your holistic veterinarian may also have other natural remedies that will work so please ask them about Standard Process supplements because only a veterinarian can prescribe them.

Recipe Ingredients

.

  1. 1 cup of filtered or distilled water
  2. ½ cup of Feline Instincts® “Kidney Support Diet”” supplement powder.
  3. 2 lbs. boneless skinless meats; 50/50 chicken thighs and breast or all chicken thighs. Also, all dark ground turkey is good.
  4. 1 cup of raw liver: Use chicken liver for chicken & turkey.Beef liver for beef and Lamb. For liver powders see liver label and double the amounts to use .
  5. 1.5 LB canned or steamed peeled & pureed squash. See below
  6. 4 Salmon Oil Capsules (4000 mg) or 2 strokes of the salmon oil pump.

Some cats will throw up beef meats.

.

Mixing

.

  • Add water to bowl, puncture and squeeze salmon capsules in water and stir.
  • Add pureed liver & chopped, ground or diced meat and stir gently.
  • Add the Feline Instincts™ “Kidney Support Diet” powder and stir gently until mixed well with liver and water.
  • Add any of the Squashes or a 25oz can of pumpkin. Peel, seed and chop other squashes. Then cook well in a vegetable steamer and puree thoroughly in a blender or food processor. Set aside to cool. NO other veggie  can be used because squash gives the cat the fiber and extra water they need.
  • Portions can be frozen in ice cube trays, and then packaged in freezer bags once frozen.
  • Keep meals frozen for up to 6 months and keep thawed only 24 hours. Don’t leave food out for feeding more then 1/2 hour, then put back in fridge.

Yields 18 x 1/2 portions.  All ingredients of this recipe are essential. Replacing or omitting ingredients will interrupt the nutritional balance.

Serve 1/2 - 3/4 cup twice a day or as directed by your vet .

Mix thoroughly and package portions immediately for freezing by dividing portions as single or double meals in small freezer bags.  I use pint size freezer bags.  Then store them in a large freezer bag or Tupperware containers and divide the layers of bags with paper towels.

Tips to switch Kitty to a raw diet:

1. I personally do not believe in fasting a cat to make them eat a raw diet. It’s never worked for me or anyone we know.

2. Try using our chicken Liver powder on the meals. Everyone says it works really well. Our cats at Feline Instincts often won’t eat the turkey meals unless we sprinkle some Chicken Liver Powder or Halo Liv A Little's chicken treats crumbled on the meals. Both are excellent enticements and can be ordered from our ordering page.

NEW. In addition to the above enticements, we also use a baby food by Earth's Best babies first soup Butternut Squash with Chicken - 6 months or order baby food. Our older cats lick it up on plate alone in between meals and on tops of their meals. This is an excellent addition to in between meals when you have a kidney challenged kitty or dog.

3. All cats will walk away from food that doesn't smell familiar to them. Try putting some on their lips to make them taste it. Pet them and tell them it’s good.

4. Mix any kind of food they like to the raw meal just to get them to eat it; chicken broth, beef broth, salmon or tuna juice. Then, gradually take away that extra food you mixed in each time you feed them until they are eating just the raw meal.

5. Take up ALL dry foods as they are very addictive to cats because of the addicting flavor enticements the commercial pet food companies spray on those cereal junk foods. If your cat knows it's around she will opt for that instead of the raw foods anytime. And cats know how to do the waiting game better then we do.

6. Sometimes, it takes a little while to switch a kitty over to a raw diet. But more then often if a cat is reluctant to eat the raw meals it only takes a few days to a week or two if you really try

7. Stools will be firm and less often (about 3-4 days apart) because there is very little waste when fed a raw diet. Email me if you have any questions.

8. IMPORTANT
Some cats throw up raw beef and beef liver powder.   If you do not know your kitty can tolerate beef raw then I recommend you use only poultry until you test you cat with a piece of raw beef first. Contact me for more help if you have any questions.

Tips on giving pills..
1.Crush them into a powder if kitty won't eat them straight out or if you don't want to pill the cat.

2.Take crushed pills and lace it with just a little chicken liver powder or baby food squash and chicken meals...6 months or order baby food.

3. Get the famous 4 Flags Over Aspen Cat Sack. The cat stays calm while trimming nails, giving pills or teeth cleaning. We use it here at Feline Instincts

when we need to get some tartar off their teeth.
